Vaayu: Sustainable Pavilion Architecture & Terracotta Facade Design
Project Overview & Climate-Responsive Design
Designed by SQUARE, the Vaayu pavilion is a striking example of modern, climate-responsive architecture. Our primary objective for this project was to create a functional, visually compelling structure that actively responds to its environmental context. As a leading architecture firm in Kolkata, we focus on integrating sustainable design principles with powerful aesthetic statements, ensuring the architecture is both beautiful and highly efficient.
The Terracotta Envelope: A Breathable Skin
The building's defining feature is its intricate, geometric terracotta jaali (perforated screen). Wrapping the entire pavilion, this facade serves as a modern interpretation of a traditional Indian architectural element. Acting as a breathable skin, the terracotta envelope not only pays homage to vernacular design and local craftsmanship but also establishes a distinct, deeply textured identity for the structure.
Light Control & Architectural Contrast
Beyond its visual appeal, the geometric screen serves a critical environmental function. It effectively filters harsh sunlight and significantly reduces solar heat gain, while casting dynamic, dappled shadows across the interior spaces throughout the day. To contrast this warm, textured brickwork, we introduced bold, monolithic dark-grey canopies. These contemporary elements aggressively puncture the traditional facade, framing the entryways and creating a powerful, dramatic sense of arrival for visitors.
