Square — Architecture & Interior Design Practice, Kolkata
We design spaces that people remember.
Square is an award-winning architecture and interior design practice based in Kolkata. For over eighteen years, we have worked across hospitality, commercial, and residential projects — delivering spaces that are precise in their thinking, distinctive in their character, and built to endure.
We are not a large firm. We are a focused one. Every project that carries the Square name has been conceived, developed, and delivered with the full attention of our founding team.
The Practice
Square was founded in 2008 by Ranit Maiti and Subhrajit G. Mitra, both graduates of Jadavpur University's School of Architecture (B.Arch 2006, M.Urban Design 2008). What began as a two-person studio has grown into a fifteen-person practice with an active portfolio spanning restaurants, hotels, sales pavilions, offices, clubs, and luxury residences across India.
Ranit leads the creative and design direction of the practice. His work is rooted in a rigorous understanding of space, material, and light — and a belief that great design is always site-specific, never generic. Subhrajit leads process, execution, and project delivery — ensuring that every Square project is as well-built as it is well-designed.
Together, they have built a practice that is recognised nationally for the quality and consistency of its work across a wide range of project types and scales.
Recognition
Square has been recognised by some of India's most respected design institutions and publications.
Ranit Maiti and Subhrajit G. Mitra were named in the Forbes 30 Under 45 list — Architecture & Design category — one of fewer than five architecture practices in India to receive this recognition. The practice was featured in Architectural Digest India's edit on 7 Beautiful Homes in Kolkata (2026), one of the country's most authoritative design publications. Square's work has also appeared in India Design magazine and across national design media for projects spanning hospitality interiors to large-scale architectural commissions.
In the institutional arena, Square has received the Prabir Mitra Memorial Award 2025, the IA&B Young Designer Award, the IIID Anchor Award, the IIID MK Award, the AICA Award, and the DSK Artist in Concrete Award — recognitions that span both creative excellence and technical achievement across architecture and interior design.
Our Work
Square's portfolio spans three primary sectors — hospitality, commercial, and residential — with particular depth in the design of restaurants, clubs, hotels, and sales environments. Notable completed projects include the Crown at Aquaview sales pavilion in Salt Lake, the 6 Ballygunge Place restaurant across multiple Kolkata locations, Yarana Supper Club, Bingsha Shatabdi bookstore redesign, Sinclairs hotels across Port Blair, Dooars, and Kalimpong, and a growing portfolio of luxury residential work across the city.
Across all project types, Square's work is characterised by a strong point of view, material intelligence, and a commitment to design that serves the specific needs of each client and each site.
The Studio
Square operates from its studio at 3A Wedderburn Road, Lake Terrace, Kolkata — a workspace designed to support close collaboration between design and delivery teams. The studio currently has fifteen members working across approximately twenty-seven active projects at any given time.
Square does not take on more projects than it can deliver with care. That constraint is deliberate — and it is reflected in the consistency of the work.
