Sinclairs Retreat HealthClub

 Chalsa I 2012

The Health Club was conceptualised as a structure that should evolve naturally from the setting. The chief material of construction was reclaimed stone from the remains of a dilapidated boundary wall. The massive stonewalls were punctured with large expanses of glazing to allow natural light .:

Designed for Sinclairs Retreat, Chalsa, the health club sits within a forested landscape in the Dooars region of West Bengal. The building's form follows the contour of the site, keeping interventions minimal to preserve the existing tree cover. Reclaimed stone from a demolished boundary wall became the primary building material — a deliberate choice that roots the structure in its context and reduces environmental impact. Generous glazing between the stone masses draws in filtered forest light, creating an atmosphere of quiet retreat. The project reflects Square's commitment to site-responsive architecture — where the landscape dictates the design, not the other way around. Completed in 2012, Chalsa Health Club remains one of Square's earliest explorations in hospitality architecture outside Kolkata.
